As a Vaccine Injury attorney and lawyer I spend my days listening to other people’s experiences with vaccinations.
I hear about the flu shots, the MMR, the Gardasil (HPV) vaccine, Hep A, Hep B etc etc….and sometimes I heard about their vaccine injuries. Vaccines are quite safe but very rarely there are those who suffer injuries from vaccines. Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Shoulder Injuries (SIRVA), Transverse Myelitis are just a few.
None of this was on my mind when I ran into my shed at home to get my son’s soccer ball…barefoot. I think you know what is coming next. I stepped on a nail. Since it had been more than five (5) years since my last tetanus (TD) shot and I had exposed myself to the nastiest of rusty nails, it was time to visit an urgent care clinic (has to be done within twenty-four (24) hours).
So on a Sunday morning, after I dropped my son off at his soccer practice (hope the ball was worth it… : ), I walked into an urgent care clinic with a mission and some mild trepidation to get my shot. The doctor suggested at Tdap (which is a Tetanus shot and Pertussis (to prevent whooping cough).
I rolled up my sleeve, the nurse pulled the plunger back, felt around my arm to make sure it wasn’t being administered to high in the arm (to prevent a SIRVA injury) and…done. Not even a pinch.
So with this problem solved, tetanus averted, I grabbed a cup of coffee and heading to the soccer field. Now in the next couple of days was my arm sore? Yes. Did my left shoulder feel like it had been used as a punching bag? You bet.
But as the days passed, the pain subsided. The soreness disappeared. Injuries from vaccines are real, but they are very rare. And most are incident-free. I was fortunate, not everyone is.
Last point…where shoes when running outside or into sheds…..
