In honor of Earth day, we pause to celebrate this wondrous planet and to tip our hat to those working to make our planet cleaner, safer and healthier.
Those folks are the scientists. They include Doctors and researches into diseases such as Whooping Cough and Tetanus. Mumps, Measles, influenza (the “flu”) and many others. They are those who develop the vaccines that keep us safe.
If we give into fear, then our worst instincts have won. We will become less safe as a society and less healthy.
Vaccines generally are very safe. But vaccine reactions occur. The fact that the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program exists is proof positive that people do have reactions to vaccines. These vaccine injuries are thankfully very rare, but very real to those who are injured.
So let us resolve on this Earth Day to let the science speak for itself. Let us spread the word in an honest, deliberative and factual way that vaccines are safe. But let us also acknowledge that reactions do occur.
